Mother's Day Gift Ideas

I know..you've already seen this, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why I posted this on April 1st! I guess I really was ready for Mother's day! :o)  I've added a few things, but I thought I'd better post this just as a reminder since Mother's day is just around the corner. Enjoy!

Ready for some quick Mother's Day gift ideas? This is one of the easiest and funnest gift ideas I've ever had. It just occurred to me that Mother's Day is just around the corner, so I thought I'd share these aprons I made last year for my daughter-in-law and her little girl, Lena.

Last year, I wanted to make a quick birthday gift for my daughter-in-law, who was about to deliver her first baby, my granddaughter, Lena. I splurged on the pre-made denim aprons from Michaels. (It was a Sunday so Hobby-Lobby was closed.Rats!)  The denim aprons are pricey!

However, the craft stores sell much cheaper options..in just about any color you like! I pay about $2.50 to $3.00 per apron, if I don't sew it from scratch.  (Wal-mart, Hobby-Lobby, and Michaels all carry them. Hobby-Lobby has the very best selection. Wal-mart has the best prices.)

The supplies you will need are:
  • purchased apron for embellishing
  • fabric paint or iron on letters
  • fabric scraps
  • ribbon and or bias tape
  • a few 1" buttons (white is my favorite color)
  • embroidery thread (optional)
  • stitch witchery for the leaves. (iron on webbing)  Cut some in thin strips if you don't want to buy the 5/8" wide stitch witchery tape on the roll for the stems.
I've done a tutorial already for how to embellish a tote bag ( a very good Mother's Day gift idea in itself!).

If you are a seamstress, you could make matching mother-daughter aprons for you and your daughter. You can make matching ones for yourself and your mom, for your mom and daughter or even one for just your mom.

How about a fabric covered journal? You can read how to do this here.

You can also make one for you and your son! I didn't give instructions for that, but for those of you who are crafty, I think you could figure out what I did. I bought the large apron pre-made but cut out a couple of matching ones for the little guys. These were for my daughter-in-law, Amanda, who just had our third grandson!

With a little creativity, there are all kinds of things you can buy to embellish and all kinds of ways to embellish just about anything.

If you don't want to make the yo-yos, you can always just gather ribbon and tie it in a circle. Gathered ribbon makes cute flowers too!

Just a quick reminder, that I'm gone to a tournament with the kids and can't get to the internet except to check emails via my Ipod..maybe...   I'll be home Sunday evening. :o) This is a previously scheduled post. :o)

How lovely! I find it very satisfying to make something prettier but I have never tried it on an apron like that. I have all sorts of ideas in my mind now. Thanks for sharing!

Those are so pretty! I am not crafty when it comes to clothing, but I'd like to try something like this. Thanks for posting!

Great post! Reminds me that not everything has to be made brand new from scratch. Prettying up something you already have is also a good way to save money while having a good crafty time.

I like to make repurposed aprons, too! I usually use a Men's dress shirt and sheets. I have some pics on my blog. Hope you are having a good trip.
