Three More Thanksgiving Crafts....for You!

It looks like fall around here...at last! We hung my Thanksgiving Turkey, the one I quilted many years ago. My friend, Margie, actually did this turkey's body and then she got tired of the project. She gave it to me, so I added the feathers and the scrap border. It was my first attempt to machine quilt..but I try not to look to close. :-)

Mr. Turkey always announces the beginning of fall at our house.

My daughter and I have had a lot of crafty fun this last couple of weeks.  We went on a nice long walk and couldn't help but gather leaves. The colors were SOooo pretty!  Of course, then we had to figure out what to do with them all.

If you go for a walk with your family tomorrow and have little ones in tow, perhaps you would like to try this too.

Rebekah just arranged them all on a styrofoam board and then we hung it on the wall in the school room to add a little seasonal pizzaz. For as long as they last, we'll enjoy them.

We also made those Thanksgiving candle holders in gourds that I told you about last month. The mini-pumpkins were all gone by the time I bought ours, so we used green and white gourds in pumpkin shapes. I think they turned out fine.

They really are simple to make.

Just buy the gourds, a few sprigs of holiday decor, short taper candles, and some fake (or real) leaves. I broke all the decor apart and made piles of 'knobby' things, leaves, and bright beads. You could tie ribbon around them, but we decided they were 'busy' enough without the bows.

Then you do need a 3/4" drill bit and a drill. Hubby did this for me. I could have done it...but he does it better.   You only need to drill a hole through the top, not through the whole gourd.

Hint: Pull the stem off with pliers. Then drill.

For Christmas, I may try doing the same thing with large apples, red berries and holly leaves. Wouldn't that be pretty? (If the stores are out of gourds...apples will work in a pinch.)

For place cards, Rebekah, made her own little designs. She is so good at that sort of thing.

When we were done with the table decor...(about 6pm)...we went to work on our part of Thanksgiving dinner. We are sharing it with friends, so even though we are cooking double quantity, it's still less work.

Of course, I did assign my youngest son, 17, to peel potatoes. Between garbage duty and KP duty, he did his part. Rebekah and I got the dishes either cooked... or ready to do so.  (Hubby only had to make ONE run to the store...for cream cheese. :o)

Tonight, the cranberry sauce is cooling in the fridge, the potatoes are peeled and covered in water, ready to boil in the morning. The candied sweet potatoes will go in the oven right after the ham comes out.  I'm still working on the lime jello salad. It's cooling..and waiting for me to add the whipped cream and pineapple. (Sure hope it jells OK!) It's nice to go to bed knowing most of the work is finished.

My friend is covering the other dishes and a turkey. (She got stuck with the house cleaning...thank you Debbie!..but we are bringing the table decor.) We love this family and are really looking forward to sharing our holiday with them.

If you can't celebrate with your family, then the next best thing is to spend the day with good friends. Don't you think?

I'll be thinking of you and hope to hear how your holiday went as well. I pray that it is a special time of celebration and Thanksgiving for our many blessings.

No matter what your present circumstances...if you start counting those blessings up, it's sure to bring a little smile.

What are you most thankful for this year?
